The UNESCO Youth Session will take place in St. Petersburg

21.09.2020

Several thousand young men and women from 190 countries will be its delegates.

On Monday, September 21, it became known that the 2022 youth session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee will take place at Mining University. This decision was adopted at a meeting of the working group on the organization and conduct of the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which was held in Kazan. The meeting participants unanimously agreed with the proposal to organize a youth session at St. Petersburg Mining University and include it in the official program for approval by President Vladimir Putin.

The University is closely connected with UNESCO. In 2018, the International Competence Centre for Mining Engineering Education was established here under the auspices of this organization. The university has excellent facilities and the infrastructure necessary for high- status events: a congress center with two thousand seats, conference rooms, meeting rooms, and a hotel. The University also has extensive experience in holding major international conferences, such as the Russian-German Raw Materials Forum, Russian-British Raw Materials Dialogue, International Coal Congress, Forum of Future Leaders of the World Oil Council, and many others.

The youth session in St. Petersburg will take place in parallel with the main one. Since large-scale events have been successfully organized in the capital of Tatarstan more than once, the President of the Russian Federation supported the initiative of the head of the Republic, Rustam Minnikhanov, to hold a UNESCO session in Kazan. A live webcast of the meetings will connect delegates in both cities.

Representatives of 190 member countries of the Committee under the age of 25 will arrive in the Northern Capital. In particular, students and postgraduate students, as well as young scientists who specialize in the matters of preserving world heritage.

The plan is that the youth meeting will become a model for the session of the UNESCO Committee. The invited experts will demonstrate to the young delegates the basic principles of the organization's functioning. Young people will discuss the implementation of the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, reflect on its future, and make presentations on outstanding cultural and natural sites of their countries.
