03.12.2019

Eduard Ogai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kazakhmys Corporation, visited Mining University. The purpose of the visit was to get acquainted with the educational and scientific potential of the university and explore the prospects for company’s involvement in the creation of the Kazakhstan branch of the International Competence Centre for Mining Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO as part of Karaganda Technical University.

Kazakhmys Corporation PLC (“mys” in Kazakh means copper) is a major mining and metallurgical company. In 1997, it was founded and registered in the form of a joint stock company. The Group operates in the mining industry; its main activity is the extraction and processing of copper ore into cathode copper and wire rod, refining, sale of precious metals and other by-products resulting from the extraction and processing of copper. In 2014, Kazakhmys PLC was split into a private KZMS PLC and a public KAZ Minerals Plc, whose shares are listed on the London Stock Exchange.

For 9 months of 2019, the Kazakhmys Holding produced more than 184 thousand tons of copper in cathode equivalent. This exceeds the figures of the previous year by 9.3 thousand tons (+ 5.3%). The company’s processing plants processed 22.8 million tons of ore.

We exceed the 2018 indicators for copper and the planned figures for this year. One of the reasons of that is the launch of the second ore thermal furnace at the ZhMZ (Zhezkazgan Copper Smelting Plant - ed.). We keep going with exploration: this year, we have been exploring five promising areas for copper and polymetal deposits. Besides, we are going to move to a new level of ore beneficiation, either through the construction of a new processing plant or modernization of the existing one.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kazakhmys Corporation Eduard Ogai

Eduard Ogai visited the university’s laboratories, got acquainted with the university’s scientists’ research areas, held a working meeting with the rector, Chairman of the Governing Board of the International Competence Centre for Mining Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO Vladimir Litvinenko in the context of the company’s interests in implementing joint projects with both Mining University and the Competence Center.

The Kazakhmys company was formed in the complicated transitional period for the entire post-Soviet space. Today, actively integrating with the global stock market, it makes a great contribution to the stability of the economy of Kazakhstan. The presence of a powerful raw material base, willingness to invest in its reproduction and excellent human resources open up great prospects for the company. It is extremely important that its leaders strive to get out of the transition economy by creating a positive image, which is impossible without support to the training of national engineering personnel and cooperation with the scientific community. The company has all the capabilities in order to achieve the strategic goals of its development.

Rector of St. Petersburg Mining University Vladimir Litvinenko

Note: Eduard Ohio began working at the corporation in 2001 as director for marketing and international relations. Since 2005, he served as Director of Corporate Development. In 2006, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Kazakhmys Corporation PLC, the main subsidiary of the Group. Currently, he is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kazakhmys Holding PLC (Kazakhmys Holding) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kazakhmys Corporation PLC.
